My short film is a profile piece about Ottawa-based bladesmith Brian Connolly. In the beginning this project seemed simple enough, but my decision to shoot solo didn't exactly pay off in the end.
My first day of shooting went perfectly. I got some excellent footage of Brian's finished pieces, and him interacting with customers at an artisan craft show in my home town of Kemptville. The next day of shooting at Brian's workshop didn’t go quite as smoothly. I had problems from the second I hit record, when the dreaded “dirty video heads” appeared. Luckily I had brought my own camera as a back up, but this also meant the microphone I brought with me was useless, as it wasn't compatible with my camera. Visually my footage turned out great, but between not having a proper mic and the roar of the furnace I lost a lot of good material to bad audio.
