During my shoot — and throughout the semester for that matter — I learned that stills and video are more different than I could ever have imagined.
No matter the medium, we get to witness some pretty special moments from the other side of the lens.
On election day in Ottawa, I shadowed Joanne Chianello, the Ottawa Citizen’s city hall reporter. I followed her from dawn until deadline. Amidst all the chaos, one moment stands out. Maybe it’s because it was by far the calmest. Maybe it’s because it was one of those everyday moments that makes all the hectic ones worth it.
After a “catnap” — Joanne sat in bed catching up on emails — her daughter Clara arrived home from school. I worked as they talked about their days — just a mundane conversation between mom and daughter. And yet. Easily, it is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever shot. It was nothing and everything at the same time.
It was beauty, it was love, it was life. And then it was over and they jumped up to make homemade marshmallows.
(I suspect this is how superheroes live when they’re not fighting evil.)
